There are certain foods which should be avoided during the pre-pregnancy period as well as during pregnancy, because they can contain harmful bacteria, such as Listeria and Salmonella.

Foods containing high levels of Vitamin A should also be avoided, as they may be harmful to your developing baby.

It is therefore advisable to avoid:

  • unpasteurised cheese
  • pate
  • raw meat
  • liver
  • soft boiled eggs

It is also important to follow good food handling practices when cooking or storing food. The jury is out on nuts, government guidelines still say that nuts should be avoided but there have been provisional findings in a recent study that show that cases of nut allergies have gone up not down since pregnant mums have been advised to avoid them, as with everything the choice is yours.
