Ruby - C section after failed inducement
I found out I was pregnant with my first in April of 2006. I had my fair share of complications, I had emergency gall bladder
surgery in August at 22 weeks. Then bed rest for the remainder of the term, it was terrible, very scary and very boring.
But January 10 my doctor said the baby was big enough for me to get induced. They used four thankfully small pills inserted
into the cervix. It was supposed to start contractions by the third pill. They inserted the first at 9 a.m. I then had to
lie still on my back for three hours. Nothing. So they inserted the second one at noon. Nothing! Then the third at 5 p.m.
At about 9 p.m. they said I had to choose to go home or insert the fourth. “Home” I said I had had enough, my
husband and I walked out of the hospital at midnight with no baby.
The next two weeks I went back and forth with my doctor about what to do. I was so frustrated that in the end I demanded
a C section. So he scheduled me for my C-section on the 24, at 8 a.m. I had to go in at 6 a.m. We arrived and I was fine but
while sitting in the waiting room I started to panic! I was terrified. The nurses calmed me down and then I got my epidural
and it was fine!
We went in to the delivery room and as my doctor was talking to me I didn't realize they had already made the incision.
It was about 15 minutes and my son Tommy was born at 8:25 a.m.
What no one tells you about C-sections is that , it hurts. As they put it all back in it stings. I told them it hurt and
they told me what they were doing in graphic detail. I got nauseous. They gave me some medicine and I was out. I woke up in
recovery. They took me down to see my husband, baby and family. It was really easy for me to recover, And in six weeks I was
completely well.

Rachel - C section after gestational diabetes
The experience of carrying and delivering my first child was the best time of my entire life. I found out I was pregnant
in August 2004. The baby was due on April 16, 2005. I was fortunate, no morning sickness or dizziness.
I had a perfectly normal pregnancy until my 28th week, when I was diagnosed with having Gestational diabetes after failing
the one-hour sugar test AND then three-hour test. I was then lectured on the proper diet and I monitored my sugar levels.
I did well and only gained about 24 pounds until my last month.
In my last month it was horrible. I was so desperate to have the baby. I was extremely swollen, and my whole body ached,
I couldn’t sleep or anything, just your normal 8 month pregnant woman I suppose. We knew the baby was big and had been
monitoring him closely. My doctor and I had decided that if he were 9 pounds or more at my last ultra sound I would have a
C section. To my horror my last ultrasound revealed my little boy was expected to be 10 pounds!
We scheduled the C-section for March 24 2005. We were so nervous, anxious, scared, excited, every emotion imaginable! I
tried hard to keep it together the morning of the 24th. It's so weird to know that you are walking in to have your baby on
a certain date and time. It's like you know exactly what to expect, but you have no idea what it's going to be like. What
was it going to feel like to meet my son and see his perfect face for the first time?
The surgery went well. The baby was delivered at 11.56 am. They told my husband to stand up and watch our son being born.
I started to cry. He was the best thing in the world. Still is.
By the time I got home I was fine other than not being able to lift. It was a little hard to get out of bed, and I couldn't
comfortably lie on my side. After the first week I was back to normal. The scar is nothing! I walked the halls while in the
hospital, and my advice is to do so if you have a C-section. It felt great, and the nurses let me push the baby around in
his bassinet while I walked.
The birth of my son and the following days in the hospital were the best four days of my entire life. I wish I could relive
those moments over again. All the emotion and excitement. It was something you can only feel. There is no way of describing
how wonderful it is.

Sophie - Chose C section instead of being induced
When I was five months pregnant, I asked my midwife what to expect with a C section. She explained carefully to me the
details, but encouraged me to have a natural birth. The ninth month came and I still didn't know if I would choose a C-section
or a natural birth. I guess I finally told myself to let nature decide. November 20th, 1999 was the due date shown in my ultra
sound.
November 20th passed and there was no sign of contractions or pain. My doctor required me to undergo a test that would
detect how often the contractions were. On November 25, again I visited my doctor without any sign of major contractions.
I was not even dilated at 1 centimetre. She told me that if I did not experience any pain in two days that I would have to
be induced. She explained that after being induced, there would still be a chance I would to undergo a C-section if the baby
did not come out. My husband and I decided to go for a C-section instead of being induced and the doctor agreed. We had the
C-section scheduled for the 29th. I was admitted to the hospital at 6 am and my C-section was scheduled for 10am. The resident
doctor was very friendly and they checked on me every so often. By 10.20 a.m., my son was born!
After the operation, I still had my IV and used two bottles of painkiller. The second day after the operation, I was up
and visiting my son at the nursery. The third day my doctor allowed me to go home. Recovery was not hard. There was a little
pain every now and then, but other than that, everything was okay. I would recommend C-sections to my friends and family.
I think it's less stressful and you can even enjoy the ordeal of giving birth. I don't think it makes your love for your baby
less, because giving birth is miraculous by itself.

Janet - C section after pre-eclampsia
I was married on October 6, 1997, my husband and I felt it would be right to start a family right away. I was 28 and my
husband was 34, so we felt we were ready. I ended the birth control pill on October 23, and I was pregnant by November 22.
It was a huge surprise to the both of us. I was due on July 30.
My pregnancy was very uneventful until about my 34th week when I started going into pre- eclampsia. I had a doctor's appointment
on July 23 and my G.P. said it was time to start an induction. According the ultrasounds this child was looking to be very
large and he was afraid that since I have a small torso and an average size pelvis that my chances of a C-section were getting
greater the longer we waited. So my husband and I said OK and we were very excited about seeing our child. So on July 25th
they started the induction at 11 am, at about 1:30 I started getting terribly painful cramps that would not stop. I was transferred
over to labour and delivery at approximately 4 nothing happened! The doctor came in at 8 am. and broke my water, what a weird
feeling it’s almost like you are peeing, but you cannot stop it. I had every intention of no pain medications since
this was my first pregnancy I wanted to experience the whole thing! Well, that went out the window rather quickly! I was in
quite a bit of pain and took every thing offered I ended up receiving an epidural. I was dilated to about 2 centimetres when
I received it. I know that will slow down labour, but I was in quite a bit of pain again and my doctor encouraged me to have
it. I laboured all day, not really feeling a thing, which really was nice after all. The epidural, in fact, did not slow down
my labour, my contractions were very strong and long, the whole day, I just was not progressing. Reluctantly we agreed it
was time for a C-section.
So at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday July 24, our daughter Poppy Elizabeth was born. She was very healthy weighing 7 pounds and
13 ounces, and 20 inches long. She is an absolute joy, although it is difficult still trying to get adjusted to parenthood.
Her birth was a wonderful experience and I do not discount having a C-section as not giving birth, anyway our beautiful and
healthy child came out was a good way to us.
Good luck to all those pregnant mothers out there, I really enjoyed reading the stories when I was pregnant.

Laura - C section after breach
It didn't look like our breach baby was going to turn by himself, and I opted to not go with the external manipulation
because of the risks involved. So, we decided on a C section, we woke up at 4a.m. on Sept. 26, and were at the hospital by
5:30 a.m. for my scheduled appointment at 11. I was admitted immediately and put my gown on and got into the bed where they
hooked me up to the monitor. They shaved me and inserted the catheter (ouch) and IV. I remember that I wasn't nervous at all,
just excited, as I watched my husband gear up so that he could be with me in the operating room. After some paperwork was
filled out and my doctor came in to say hello, we were wheeled into the operating room
I had an epidural, which didn't hurt at all, but being naked on the table gave me the chills (I'm sure it was nerves too!)
and I did get some serious shakes for a few minutes. They raised the sheet and started asking me if I could feel them poking
and pulling at me. I couldn't feel much of anything. They started yanking a lot and tugging at my tummy. I asked my husband
what they were doing and he said they were cleaning my tummy and prepping me. Little did I know that they had already made
the cut and were taking out our son! My husband watched the whole thing. Our son was born at 11.25 am and within a minute
or two my husband brought him over to me all clean and bundled up. I couldn't hold him yet because they were stitching me
up.
My recovery was sort of rough... when the spinal wore off, I started itching like crazy, which was really annoying. I threw
up alot, which really hurt and couldn't laugh or hiccup with ease. All in all, though, it was a great experience.
