Sarah, - Had twins at 33 wks after being induced
At 33 weeks I was admitted to hospital and told that I would have to be induced I wasn’t happy as it was still early
but the midwife reassured us that it was best for us all. . The doctor had told me that I would be induced in the delivery
suite, as they wanted to keep a close eye on me because I was having twins.
At 10am I went down to the delivery suite with the midwife to be induced, she warned me that I would be up and down all
day. When a doctor finally came round to examining me I was already 3cm dilated so they decided they would break my waters.
A lovely little female doctor with small hands then broke my waters and I immediately went to 5cm. They then left me till
12 noon and I still hadn't had a contraction, they decided they would put a drip up. I think having the cannula fitted into
my hand was one of the worst parts of the whole labour and birth!
At about 4pm it was decided that an anaesthetist would be called and the epidural put in. I can't say I was in a great
deal of pain, but it was to be for the best. At about 7.30pm the midwife told me I could start pushing with the contractions.
The only problem was that I couldn't feel the contractions so they told me when I had to push. After about 45 minutes of pushing
and me telling everyone that I just couldn't do it, Harry’s head crowned and with one final push he was born. He was
taken away, wrapped up and passed to my husband, who proudly told him he was his daddy. The midwife told me that the second
twin Thomas would be along soon, sure enough he was, his birth was easier but he was born blue and had to be resuscitated.
It was a good few minutes (it felt like weeks) before we heard him cry.
Unfortunately, I had problems delivering the placenta after all that, and I ended up in theatre to have a manual removal.
This was by far the worst experience. The same anaesthetist came back to top up the epidural and I told him I hadn't expected
to see him again. I even asked if he could knock me out because I needed a rest! No luck but once it was all over I was just
over the moon to have produced two healthy boys.

Sharon, had twin girls after a C section
Everything was going well and I had had an uneventful twin pregnancy until I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes (GD)
at 30wks. Try as I might I was able to control my GD with a sugar free diet and stabbing my fingers 3 times a day to check
my blood sugar levels!
At 35 weeks I went to see the midwife she checked my wee sample and BP and immediately referred me to the hospital who
decided that it was possible that I was in the early stages of pre-eclampsia. I was admitted there and then and had to have
regular BP checks as well as the 24 hour urine collection - great fun trotting off to the loo with a jug and a huge container…...NOT!
The next morning the one of the midwives’ tried to get a trace on both heartbeats but could only find one. She wasn't
overly worried and said they'd have a try later - later turned out to be 7.30pm that night and still only one heartbeat to
be found. They called in another midwife who could only find one heartbeat, then they called a doctor in from the delivery
suite who couldn't find a second heartbeat, they brought an old mobile ultrasound machine in - still no heartbeat and that's
when I started crying - as I thought I'd lost one of my babies.
Eventually, at 11.30pm a consultant arrived and opened up the Ultrasound Department and found 2 heartbeats straight away.
I can't tell you how relieved I was.
Next morning, I showered and was back in my room drying my hair when I felt a trickle of water, then another I realised
my waters had broken! I stood at the door of my room and shouted over to the nurse's station opposite that my waters had gone.
They weren't having any of it and implied I'd wet myself until I got on the bed and there was a big gush of water. I resisted
the urge to say "I told you so" and they hooked me up to the foetal monitor where by some miracle both heartbeats were found
straight away! I asked them to ring my husband and tell him the news. He arrived over an hour later, as soon as he arrived
they made plans to get me to delivery suite so they could get the epidural set up straight away which I'd asked for in my
birth plan. I could still 'feel' my contractions after the epidural, they weren't painful but I was definitely aware of them.
I was checked at about 1pm and was only 1cm dilated. The doctor told me they would check me again at 5pm so I spent the rest
of the afternoon dozing in between BP checks.
At a little after 5pm the doctor returned and examined me, he said I was 5cm dilated, which was great news but then he
broke the bad news, twin 1 was presenting shoulder first and wasn't going anywhere! He told me I would need to have a c-section
which was the last thing I wanted. I went to pieces, I'd so wanted a natural delivery and was worried sick about the op itself
and the aftermath. I blubbed all the way down to theatre and only stopped when they moved me onto the operating table. The
anaesthetist made sure my epidural was topped up and that I could feel nothing at all and then with my husband at my shoulder
the op started. I told him to talk to me to keep my mind occupied, it didn’t work but very quickly I heard my daughter
cry, followed by another cry distinctly different, two gorgeous little girls. I was so totally preoccupied by my new babies
that I didn't think much about the rest of the operation as they closed me up. Once the op was over I had to go into recovery,
I sent my husband to ring my Mum & Dad to tell them the news and then with a baby cradled in each arm we were off for
the journey back to the ward.
I didn't have any hands-on experience with them in the first 24 hours as I was laid completely flat hooked up to a drip
and catheterised, so I had to watch as the staff did the first feeds and nappy changes which is what I wanted to do, I found
really it difficult. I was allowed up after the 24 hours and was surprised that I could actually walk as I thought I'd be
doubled up in agony. We left the hospital two days later and we haven’t looked back since.

Michelle, had a C section as one of her twins was breach
In March I had just been for my first scan so I was about 12 weeks pregnant. We got terrible news that the baby wasn't
growing and they couldn't find a heart beat. I hard to descried how my husband and I felt as we were numb, I was taken to
have a D& C procedure and it was over, no one seemed to understand the pain we were in and we were given a string of platitudes,
it wasn’t meant to be, you are young, its gods way, etc. none of which helped and after a while made me quite angry.
Some six months later we decided somewhat reluctantly to try again. A year later and no luck so we went to see the G.P.
who referred us to the hospital. We were told my ovaries were covered in cists (P.C.O.S) and that we would never be able to
conceive naturally. An appointment was made for us to go and talk about starting I.V.F treatment but a few weeks later I did
a pregnancy test and unbelievably I was pregnant!
I didn't want to get too excited until after the 1st scan, because of what happened before. So as the jelly was applied
I felt sick, the nurse looked at me and said its ok oh and you do know its twins! We were blown away neither of us could speak
and then I burst into tears. We told our families and friends and they all thought we were kidding them until we showed them
the scan. 38 weeks in, we were told twin 1 was breech so a c-section was booked for the following day. We arrived at hospital
at 8am and my c-section was booked for 1.30pm. I went down for my spinal about 1pm, I had to have 2 spinals and an epidural.
The boys were born at 3.40and 3.43 respectively, 5 lbs and 5lbs 2oz.
I got back to my room about 5pm and my husband had gone to phone everyone and I can remember laying in bed with the my
2 boys at the side of me thinking Oh my god I have 2 babies how can I look after 2 babies at the same time. Then the panic
set in! My husband came back to my room and I gasped "you can't leave me alone tonight what if they both want feeding together,
I can't do it on my own!" 3 days later we were home and my husband and I were finding out just how hard it is looking after
2 babies. The first few months were really hard especially when my husband went back to work, but they are so worth it. They
are now 6 months old as I write this, everyone keeps asking if we are going to have anymore, our reply is no-way! Two is more
than I could ever have dreamed of and it is more than enough for me.

Jane - Had her babies at 33 wks after conceiving through IVF treatment
I got pregnant though IVF in March. My pregnancy seemed to be going well but by August, I was having frequent Braxton Hicks
while at work. My doctor assured me they were Braxton Hicks so I carried on. A week later I had an ultrasound that said everything
was fine, but I was very large for only being around 26 weeks. So I was sent home with rest. Not that I could have as moving
to do anything was getting too much for me.
In September I had another doctor's appointment, but nothing much came of it, other than ordering a new ultrasound to be
on 23rd, At this point I would be 29 weeks. I had a hospital appointment and my mum went with me. While getting my ultrasound,
the doctor performing it told me that I was in premature labour and I was admitted to be given drugs to stop the labour. After
24 hours it started to work. During this time I received two shots of steroids to help develop their lungs in case labour
didn't stop. After a total of three and half days in the hospital, I went home on strict bed rest. And my family and husband
made sure it was strict. On the 2nd Oct I was back in the hospital with labour again. . My doctor decided since
this was my second time for labour that she would keep me in, on bed rest. While there, my blood pressure was up. They also
found protein in my urine. So the new plan was to keep me until I delivered or my mild pre-eclampsia became worse. At 32 weeks,
I went into labour for the third time. At first I thought it was a large stitch in my side. It felt like one of the boys was
trying to get a foot or fist into my appendix. It was a sharp pain. After telling the nurse what was going on, she put me
on the monitor. I was having a contraction and was 4 centimetres dilated. Since they were one day from being 33 weeks I was
hoping natural would be the way to go for the boys. But they weren't turned the right way and we ended up having a C-section.
In about 15 to 20 minutes, they had me being prepared with an epidural. Within the hour we had two baby boys.
They were taken right to the special care unit. First boy was 5 pounds and the second boy was 4 pounds, 8 ounces.

Holly - gave birth to twins at 28 weeks one naturally and one after a C section
My husband and I found out we were pregnant with twins at 7 weeks. I had morning sickness for the first 12 weeks and everything
was great until I was 22 weeks.
I woke up one morning to get ready for work and I had some spotting. I called my doctor and went in right away for some
investigation. He checked my cervix and I was 5 centimetres dilated and my water were bulging out of my cervix. She told me
to go to the hospital immediately. I don't remember driving to the hospital. I was really worried and scared trying to figure
out what in the world I did wrong. My husband and parents soon came to the hospital. The initial thought of the doctor was
that I had an infection. I spent three days in the labour ward listening to babies' healthy cries I telling my two babies,
"Do you hear that? I want you to stay in there long enough to do that when you are born." I stayed there for six weeks on
bed rest. The day before I was 28 weeks pregnant I went into labour and gave birth to our two miracle babies. Bobby was born
vaginally weighing 2 pounds, 8 ounces and Charlie was born via emergency C section three minutes later weighing 2 pounds,
6 ounces. They are in the still in hospital but doing very well and we hope to bring them home very soon.

Dawn - had triplets at 34 weeks through a C- section
I was 32 years old and was always told I would never have children. But then on the 18 Dec, I found out I was pregnant.
I was 4 1/2 weeks. Around two weeks later I found out I was having triplets. I was very confused and terrified, to go form
thinking I would never be a mum to being the mother of three took a lot of getting used to.
I got through the shock and the pregnancy and my three girls were delivered at 34 weeks they were all very small 2 pounds,
14 ounces, 2 pounds, 11 ounces and 3 pounds when they were born and had an array of health problems but we have got through
all of them and in a month they will be one, its amazing how quickly this past year has gone but I would never have believed
we would make it but we have.

Kelly Anne - had her twins after just 45 mins of labour
I was just 17, when I was told I was pregnant, it was a huge shock and I struggled with whether or not to continue with
the pregnancy. At my first scan I was told I was having twins !!! At this point I was a scared, my partner and my mum said
they would support me and everything would be ok, so I decided to continue. At the 27 weeks scan, things were looking good.
Then at 33 weeks I was having very severe cramping, almost like a period. This seemed normal to me because I had such heavy,
painful periods. My mum looked at me and proceeded to tell me that I was in labour I argued but sure enough about 20 minutes
later my waters broke. My Dad drove me to the hospital. Once I got there the doctor checked and said that I was fully dilated
and ready to push. I had an eventful 45 minutes of labour. The girls were 4 pounds and 4 pounds, 15 ounces. They were in special
care for about a month but they soon caught up with other babies of their age. I am currently pregnant again and low and behold
it is twin boys this time, I can only hope I have such a quick labour this time!
